Hiya — I'm Henry Bley-Vroman. I've been a fiddler, neuropsychopathology biochemist, change bell ringer, and ultimate frisbee player. These days I'm a web designer and developer, graphic artist, layout designer, and photo editor/retoucher/manipulator. I'm from Hawai'i, was in New England for years, and now serve the San Francisco Bay Area. Think I should work with you? Contact me!

My first memory of doing computer art must be from about 1985. My first digital manipulation of my own digital photographs was in the early 90's, around the time my first commercial t-shirt design hit stores. In the late 90's I did a lot of hands-on photo manipulation in the wet darkroom (black-and-white and color) and monotype printing, as well as drawing, stone and wood carving, zinc etchings, painting, and clay sculpture. I've used Photoshop and Illustrator since 2000, and InDesign since 2009.
I hold a BA in cognitive science (Pomona College; major coursework in psycholinguistics, computer science, embodied cognition), and an MA in cognitive neuropsychology (Boston University; research in embodied cognition and the biochemistry of schizophrenia; program courses in brain systems, psychopharmacology, and psychopathology). I was a PhD candidate in Brain, Behavior, and Cognition (Boston University — the cold drove me away before completion); I have taught psychology and child development.
I've also studied visual design with Edward Tufte, primitive musical instruments with David Holladay (the survivalist consultant to Cast Away and Man Vs. Wild), and Sufism with the scholar Herbert Mason (protégé of Louis Massignon, who was friend to T.E. Lawrence, Toklas, etc). I've hitchiked in four countries, and criss-crossed the U.S.
